HR Laws - More Than You Ever Wanted to Know
Take a deeper dive, beyond basics into employment laws. TASB HR Services team members will provide relevant examples and discussions of HR laws including, FLSA, Title IX, ADA, and FMLA. This session will cover proposed changes of laws, current practices, and successful implementation strategies. HR support staff will learn more than they ever wanted to know and broaden their scope of best practices of employment laws.

They Posted What?!?!
Like it or not, social media is here to stay. At times, it can be a school district's friend. Other times, not so much. During this session we will look at what the law, district policies and best practices are when dealing with employment decisions that involve social media.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and youth employment standards affecting employees in the private sector and in Federal, State, and local governments. Employers must keep employee time and pay records. Also, employers must display an official poster outlining the requirements of the FLSA. Child labor provisions are designed to protect the educational opportunities of minors and prohibit their employment in jobs and under conditions detrimental to their health or well-being. There is no limit on the number of hours employees 16 years or older may work in any workweek. Hours worked ordinarily include all the time during which an employee is required to be on the employer’ premises, on duty, or at a prescribed workplace.

What does today’s substitute and absence management look like?
Substitute teachers are sometimes viewed as “a warm body in the classroom”. They are not always viewed as effective educators. However, the right substitutes can contribute to the success of your school or district. Whether you utilize substitutes to fill in for the day or for long-term absences, it is critical to hire substitute teachers that will positively impact student achievement. Learn strategies for hiring substitutes and supporting their professional growth. Attendees will have opportunities to share best practices implemented that attract and retain substitute teachers.

Title IX: What HR Professionals Need to Know
Ensuring Title IX compliance provides an environment of gender equity within schools and reduces liability risks associated with sex discrimination. HR professionals play an important role in implementing this federal law. This session will provide HR staff with an understanding of Title IX basics, including its applicability, the responsibilities of schools, and other fundamental things to know concerning this law. Attendees will be given practical suggestions on Title IX compliance and will gain insight regarding how to:

  • Recognize Title IX issues within their schools
  • Distinguish between sexual harassment and gender-based harassment
  • Apply Title IX to admissions and recruitment, counseling, athletics, and other educational facets
  • Additionally, this session will include a lecture and the use of realistic scenarios to enhance the attendees
  • Learning experience during the training. There will also be a designated time for questions and comments.
