Melva Cardenas Retires after 5 1/2 Years as TASPA Executive Director

Melva Cardenas has been a leader in school human resources including the certification, recruitment, retention and development of educators for almost 30 years. She led the human resources department in two large diverse districts, overseeing all functions of the Human Resources Department and worked as the Texas Education Agency Director of Educator Certification addressing educator certification and human resources concerns at the state level before coming to TASPA

Melva started making her contributions to TASPA while a human resources director in West Texas by serving as the District 6 representative on the TASPA executive board recruiting new members and participation from this area.

Melva served as the TASPA executive director for over 5 years growing the association membership by 30% to over 1000 members. During Melva’s tenure, TASPA expanded the number and types of professional development opportunities including adding the popular regional certification trainings and Human Resources Legal Issues Webinar series. Her TASPA Updates have become part of our members Monday morning routine as they begin their work week and her Legislative Alerts kept members updated on bills impacting them.

Melva represented TASPA and the profession of school human resources at the Legislature, State Board of Educator Certification and the Texas Education Agency with authority and dignity bringing recognition and credibility to both the association and the profession.

Melva will be leaving her current position as TASPA Executive Director June 31. Her leadership and guidance will be missed by the TASPA Board, staff, partners and members.
