President's Message - August 2019

Johjania Nájera
TASPA President

Greetings!

I think we can say that “Summer” is officially over with school about to start! Here is a quick recap of Summer 2019: the TASPA Law & Summer Conference was a huge success thanks to the work of Dr. Lolly Guerra and her team including the lovely volunteers; their work continued through the summer to ensure success at the upcoming Fall Support Staff Conference, the Region One ESC & TASPA Mini Conference and the TASB/TASPA HR Academy.

Most of our students will be returning to school sometime this week. All summer long, we have been focused on hiring the best for students. Summertime may not be the time most HR folks take vacation for we are ensuring that all vacancies are filled. So, with the excitement of a new school year about to open, have you taken a moment to recalibrate your why? Why do you get up every morning and come into your HR Department? What if you were no longer in HR, does your why change?

My why is to help the person in front of me the best I can to meet their needs at that time. That person is not always one at work, but the person I may come across at the grocery store, at home and yes, even while I am driving! While it has only been in the past two years that my Superintendent has been talking to us about our why, I find great comfort in going back to my youth recollecting evidence of my why. It has not changed, and I have my parents to thank for that!

I am looking forward to a great 2019-2020 school year and to continue leading this amazing organization through the end of 2019.

In closing, I want to share my prayer with you: I pray for a safe school year for all students across the nation, for fear not to be part of our hallways and classrooms; for teachers to have the strength each day to engage students to realize their potential and dreams; that our administrators support our teachers each day; that teacher aides, custodians, cafeteria workers and all staff that support students outside the classroom feel valued and appreciated for their work behind the scenes; that our school boards and community continue to support the work of superintendents leading schools to provide the best for students and for all Human Resources personnel to be the model of integrity and humanity to others.

Joyfully,
Johjania
