Texans Bring Home Six Awards from AASPA National Conference in Detroit
The American Association of School Personnel Administrators held its annual national conference on October 18-21 in Detroit, Michigan. The four-day conference included three general session keynote speakers, sixty-seven breakout topics, and numerous and fun networking opportunities, including the Texas/California Reception, an awards luncheon, and a wonderful dinner and dance at the renowned Henry Ford Museum. The Michigan ASPA (MASPA) hosts and the AASPA staff truly outdid themselves with this conference!
The following Texans were honored during the Awards Luncheon or the Business Meeting:
The Plano ISD Human Resources Division won the Newsletter Award, which was presented to Rebeca R. Wussow, Director, HR Services. Newsletters are judged on both content and layout.
Plano ISD won a second award at the conference, The William L. Hunter-Point of Light Award, which was presented to Rob Stewart, Director for Compensation and Diversity. The William L. Hunter-Point of Light Award gives recognition to school districts making outstanding contributions through the implementation of innovative and comprehensive teacher development programs primarily focused upon strategies designed to increase the number of teachers of color in school districts.
Roselia A. Salinas, Director of Human Resources at Aldine ISD, was awarded the Raymond E. Curry Award, which is a competitive monetary award granted to an AASPA member on the basis of seeking assistance in a research effort directly related to personnel administration or in a professional development activity.
Carrie Durley, Executive Director of Human Resources at Aldine ISD, was honored with a Special Recognition Award. These awards are presented to individuals who have made substantial contributions to AASPA, advancing or enhancing the professional visibility of the association and its purposes and/or the field of school personnel administration.
Dr. Mary Hopkins, Executive Director of Personnel at Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, was honored as a departing board member for all her services to AASPA and for serving as Immediate Past President in 2005-2006.
TASPA won the Arch S. Brown State Affiliate of the Year Award for the eighth consecutive year, which is given on the basis of affiliate activities in communication with members, member participation, affiliate conferences, special projects, cooperative activities, and other contributions. This award is a reflection of the outstanding membership of TASPA. THANK YOU for everything you do to make TASPA and Texas great!!
The customary Texas Reception was co-hosted this year by the
Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). Special thanks go to the Education Career Alternatives Program and Sharon Fikes, Executive Director of ECAP, for helping host the Texas/California reception and substantially fund the Texas portion of the costs for the event.
