TASPA Board Names New Executive Director
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Rose M. Benitez has been named the new TASPA Executive Director. Dr. Benitez will take over officially on July 1, 2015. She will replace Melva V. Cárdenas who has served TASPA for the past 5 1/2 years. Read the announcement here.

2014-15 Webinar Series, "Avoiding Claims of Harassment, Retaliation and Discrimination," Wednesday, June 17, 2015, 10:00 – 11:15 AM. Registration is now open. TEA Principal Survey
TEA has distributed a survey that campus principals across the state are required to complete. The survey will collect data regarding the performance of first-year teachers and the effectiveness of educator preparation programs in preparing first-year teachers to succeed in the classroom. The survey collection began on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. All surveys must be submitted by Monday, June 15, 2015. Questions regarding principal survey can be submitted to email@example.com.
Travel and Mileage Reimbursement Rates
The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts has published the travel and mileage reimbursement rates to be effective January 1, 2015, through August 31, 2015. Read more.
UPDATED: Guidance for Implementation of NCLB Highly Qualified (HQ) Teacher Requirements
The Texas Education Agency has updated the NCLB HQ guidance document (also referred to as a Q&A) effective September 5, 2014. A link to updated document is now posted on TEA's HQ web page (found under General Information).
TEA Has Posted Critical Shortage Areas for 2014-2015
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has received approval from the US Department of Education (USDE) for the 2014-2015 teacher shortage areas. The approved shortage areas for the 2014-2015 school year are: Bilingual/English as a Second Language, Career and Technical Education, Computer Science, English as a Second Language, Mathematics, Science, and Special Education – Elementary and Secondary Levels. The approved shortage areas allow the administrator the ability to recruit and retain qualified teachers and to help reward teachers for their hard work using the loan forgiveness opportunities. TASB Sample Letter on Substitute Eligibility for TRS-ActiveCare
TASB HR Services has posted a sample letter on substitute eligibility for TRS-ActiveCare insurance. This sample letter can be used by districts to notify substitutes of their eligibility to enroll in TRS-ActiveCare. REMINDER: NCLB Highly Qualified Teachers – 6th Grade Teachers
The change to 6th grade for HQ purposes does NOT take away the EC-6 and the 4-8 Generalist tests as ways to be HQ for 6th grade. It only adds routes to HQ, such as a 4-8 subject exam, a college major or college coursework, etc. The 6th grade is covered with both the EC-6 and 4-8 generalist tests. Read the TEA letter here.
